Banc of California: Business Angel of the Year Honoree

Banc of California, the largest independent bank based in Los Angeles, donated $1 million from its Wildfire Relief & Recovery fund to launch the Small Business Initiative with Steadfast LA, a nonprofit working to rebuild the region’s economy after the devastating Eaton and Palisades fires of January 2025. The gift was used to provide direct grants of up to $50,000 to independent businesses— including retailers, restaurants, pharmacies, dentists and veterinary centers operating in Altadena, Malibu and the Pacific Palisades — areas that were hit hardest by the wildfires.

Deposit insurance should prevent bank runs, not just react to them

Emergency tools matter. In March 2023, regulators used extraordinary authorities to contain a rapidly unfolding situation. Without them, the outcome could have been far worse. But treating emergency powers as a substitute for reform confuses crisis response with system design. A modern financial system requires both crisis response and crisis prevention. The former stops panic once it begins. The latter reduces the likelihood that panic starts in the first place.

Cal Neva Hotel Owners Secure $298 Million in Financing to Redevelop as Luxury Resort

A long-dormant Lake Tahoe property is moving closer to reopening after its developers secured a $298 million financing package to redevelop the historic Cal Neva Hotel into the Lake Tahoe Proper Resort and Casino, according to the project partners. Denver-based real estate firm Realberry, in partnership with Proper Hospitality, said in a news release that the financing closes a key gap in capital needed to fully restore and reposition the nearly century-old resort, which is slated to reopen in 2027. The financing includes $223 million in Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) financing and a $75 million secured construction loan from Banc of California.

After scoring a victory with regulators, lenders are preparing to put billions of dollars in potentially freed-up capital to use. Their top priorities aren’t complicated: make more loans, invest in their businesses, give money back to shareholders and strike deals. Banc of California CEO Jared Wolff said he was encouraged that the proposals tie “capital more closely to the risk of the type of lending we’re doing.”

The Company reported net earnings available to common and equivalent stockholders of $62.0 million, or $0.39 per diluted common share, for the first quarter of 2026, compared to $67.4 million, or $0.42 per diluted common share for the fourth quarter of 2025.

The Company reported net earnings available to common and equivalent stockholders of $67.4 million, or $0.42 per diluted common share, for the fourth quarter of 2025, compared to $59.7 million, or $0.38 per diluted common share for the third quarter of 2025. For the full year 2025, net earnings available to common and equivalent stockholders of $189.2 million, or $1.17 per diluted common share, compared to $87.1 million, or $0.52 per diluted common share for the full year 2024.
